When it comes to having characters with varying sexual orientation in tv shows, I’m all for it. Ultimately sexual orientation is only a small piece of a character’s personality.
In tv shows, and especially American tv shows, however a character being gay is often their entire defining feature. This can be funny, and yes I’ve known the archetypical flamers in real life. But in general they’re just normal characters.
And in a lot of series it really doesn’t matter. Often the character’s relationships are secondary to the main plot.
Recently however I’ve noticed a lot of American series ’embracing’ the act of having gay characters. And then very uncomfortably rubbing it in our faces. Just a note it doesn’t matter who’s sucking who’s face on screen for an extended period of time, it’s still going to be uncomfortable.
